Carbs for Community: Hartford Baking Co. Celebrates Seven Years of Business

Seven years ago, carb lovers and coffee addicts united for the opening of Hartford Baking Company, a warm and welcome spot on Park Avenue in West Hartford. Featuring freshly baked breads, pastries and muffins, a full coffee menu, coffee beans from Stumptown Coffee Roasters and Giv Coffee, and tea from Harney & Sons, Hartford Baking Co. opened their doors to college students and townies of all ages. This Thursday, the beloved baking business will celebrate the grand opening of their 965 Farmington Avenue location in West Hartford and seven years of Nutmeg State success.

Founded by Scott Kluger, Hartford Baking Co. is committed to serving the Greater Hartford community. Dairy products are sourced from The Farmer’s Cow in Lebanon, coffee products take a caffeinated trip from Giv Coffee in Canton, and produce is grown and purchased from local farmers’ markets. While Kluger earned degrees in finance and economics from the University of Connecticut and Fordham University, he gained his culinary background by working as an apprentice at Billings Forge in Hartford and the 4-star Copper Beech Inn in Ivoryton.

The sense of community is exactly what makes Hartford Baking Company shine. The upstairs part of the new location is designated entirely for seating with a large bar overlooking Farmington Avenue. Freelance writers, coworkers, family, and friends gather for lunch over plates of buttery croissants, freshly brewed iced tea, nutty muffins, and decadent desserts. A casual, friendly place to grab a coffee and revel in carbohydrates is a welcome addition to West Hartford Center.

The menu consists of breakfast and lunch options like grilled cheese, BLTs, seasonal salads, and daily soups. The new West Hartford location is open until 7pm, which invites guests in for an after dinner snack or to stock up on office treats for the following day.

Freshly baked artisanal bread is the star of Kluger’s menu. Classic offerings like French country bread, country sourdough, ciabatta, and peasant sourdough are staples to the menu; however, it is common to see guests leaving the bakery with a milky iced latte in one hand and a loaf of cinnamon swirl raisin bread in the other.
